India's Zaheer out of Champions Trophy


NEW DELHI: India's pace spearhead Zaheer Khan has been forced out of next month's Champions Trophy in South Africa after undergoing shoulder surgery, officials said on Friday.Zaheer, 30, underwent surgery in Johannesburg in July after injuring his left shoulder while playing for Mumbai Indians during the Indian Premier League (IPL) Twenty20 tournament in April-May.The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) said in a statement that the left-arm paceman could be out of action till the end of the year

Two-member chess team leave for India



LAHORE: Two-member Pakistani chess team left for India via friendship bus to take part in Asian Zonal 3.2 Championship.The event, which is a qualifying round of World Chess Champion, will be held from August 9 to 18 in Indian capital Delhi. India, Bhutan, Sri Lanka, Maldives, Bangladesh and Bhutan are taking part in the championship. Amir Karim and Tanveer Gilani representing Pakistan on self financed basis.

Young Rising, Iran in National Women Football semis


ISLAMABAD: Defending champions Young Rising Star and Iran have qualified for playing the semi-finals in the fifth national Women Football Championship here at the Islamabad Sports Complex on Saturday.Iran outclassed the Higher Education Commission (HEC) by a record margin of 22 goals. Fereshteh Karimi scored eight and Sara Gomi made seven goals.In another quarter-finals, Young Rising Star defeated Punjab 7-0 after a one-sided contest.

Roddick reaches Washington Classic Tennis final


WASHINGTON: US top seed Andy Roddick outlasted John Isner 6-7 (3/7), 6-2, 7-5 on Saturday to book a finals date with defending champion Juan Martin Del Potro at the ATP Washington Classic. Fifth-ranked Roddick, playing in his first event since a five-set Wimbledon final loss to Roger Federer, fired only nine aces to 20 for Isner but hit 69 percent of his first serves and made just two unforced errors in the third set. It took five break-point chances in the third set before Roddick finally broke Isner in the penultimate game, then held serve to win after two hours and 31 minutes.

Pak blind team’s tour of England in jeopardy


ISLAMABAD: The British High Commission in Islamabad did not issue visas so far to Pakistan blind cricket team for touring England due to which the team’s tour is in danger.According to chairman Pakistan Blind Cricket Council Sultan Shah, request for the visas was submitted at the British High Commission in Islamabad on July 8 but no response was made so far.Sultan Shah said that if the visas are not issued to the blind cricket team by Monday then the team’s tour will be cancelled and then Pakistan and England both will have to bear a heavy loss.Pakistan blind cricket team was scheduled to play three One-dayers and a Twenty20 match against England during this month

Dozens killed as typhoons hit East Asia

BEIJING: At least 42 people died and scores more were reported missing Tuesday after typhoons battered East Asia, as parts of the region experienced their worst weather in half a century. Most of those killed were in Taiwan when Typhoon Morakot slammed into the island, dumping a record 3.0 metres (120 inches) of rain at the weekend. The storm hit mainland China Sunday afternoon, where it claimed at least six lives as authorities ordered more than a million people to evacuate several provinces. And Chinese state media reported Tuesday that a landslide triggered by torrential rain from Typhoon Morakot toppled "six or seven" four-storey apartment buildings, burying an unknown number of residents. They collapsed at the foot of a mountain in Pengxi Township, near Wenzhou City in the eastern province of Zhejiang late Monday evening, the official news agency said
